Content seems to be working now, tho not 100%. Changed the permalink structure because none of the articles could be reached. We’ll see. May have to backup the articles by hand and delete everything. Fresh install is always best.

New WordPress Version

So last week or so I upgraded to Wordpress v2.7, and my site dissappeared. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to go solve the problem. I’m looking at it again now. I’m able to get in thru wp-admin and add posts… but how about that index page?

I also am not sure how I can check the WP version to see if the software actually updated, but I’m sure the database did.

Ed: Ok, definitely WP2.7.1, now to get my index page back.

Real User Experience With Google Chrome

Finally, someone who knows what they are talking about and is using, or at least trying to use Chrome in a work environment.

Check out the site by John at JohnReel.com and what he thinks of Chrome.

Honestly, a lot of people are happy about Chrome’s architecture of a single process for each tab, and in my case I haven’t had a problem yet. (In response to John’s article, I’ve even had some good video experiences so far on the standard release.)

However, I think it remains to be seen whether the multiple processes end up being a good thing or not.

If you’ve got any good experience (or bad) with Chrome, let me know.

(Edit: Ok I’ve just switched themes but I’m not too happy with it. We’ll see how it goes.)

Using Chrome’s Stealth Mode (Surfing Incognito)

In Incognito (or stealth) mode, the browser itself does not keep any files relating to the browsing you do in the current window. Sites you visit are not stored in your history, and cookies are not kept between sessions. However you should be warned that if the sites you are visiting are collecting information from you, stealth mode does not keep that information private.

To open an Incognito Window for “private” browsing:

Press the Control Current Page icon

(or press CTRL-SHIFT-N)
Select New Incognito Window

A new window opens, and it allows you to surf the web without leaving a trace… as far as the info on the window is outlined anyway.

Browser History not kept

The biggest benefit to Incognito mode is that your browser history is not kept. So no matter what site you visit, you will not find it displayed in the drop down list of search suggestions, and it does not appear in your History list. Your History list is still accessible from an Incognito window, but any pages you visit while in this mode will not be show.

Cookies not saved

The other major benefit to stealth mode can also be a hindrance. Since and forms you fill out will not have the info stored in a cookie (like usernames and passwords) then you will have to sign in to any site you visit over and over again with new browser sessions. The solution to this I suppose, is to always have an Incognito window open and never close your browser.

If you have some programming skills and want to delve into modifying the open source software (since its freely available) then you could create an Incognito only browser for completely anonymous browsing!

First Google Chrome Tutorial Posted

Just got back from a wedding, had 2.5 cups of coffee so I decided to get started on the tutorials. I wrote the first one on Chrome’s “stealth” mode. So check it out in the Tutorials section: Incognito Tutorial.

Also tried setting up another MySQL database for the main front end of the site… it didn’t go so well.

Well this proves that WordPress is easy to install, but you do have to use your brain if you have non-standard installation features you have in mind.

Welcome to the WhyUseChrome blog. It might move to the main page sometime but for now this will be a good place for testing things out.
